When to go to Namibia: find the ideal season for your trip

You dream of visiting Namibia, but are unsure about the best time to go. Is it really too hot in the desert during summer? When is the best time to go on safari in Namibia to see wildlife? Since each season offers a different experience in this region of Southern Africa, it is perfectly normal to ask these questions. To help you decide when to travel to Namibia according to your interests—whether for a safari in Etosha, the dunes of Sossusvlei, the Atlantic coast, or a road trip through the heart of the desert—follow our expert advice and find the time of year that will suit you best.

Understanding the Seasons to Choose the Best Time to Visit Namibia

With its arid subtropical climate, Namibia guarantees sunny holidays almost all year round. There are two main seasons:

  • Summer (from November to April): this is the “rainy season”, mainly in the north of the country (around Etosha National Park in particular) and the Caprivi Strip. Average temperatures range from 25 to 35 °C, and can exceed 40 °C in the desert.
  • Winter (from May to October): temperatures remain very pleasant during the day (20 to 25 °C), with clear blue skies, but nights are much cooler. Be aware that this is the high tourist season, so prices are higher.

Namibia is characterized by large temperature variations between regions, but also between day and night. It can even freeze in the desert! As for rainfall, it remains rare in desert areas such as the Namib and the Kalahari, even in summer. On the coast, rain is also very rare, but fog is often present, the result of the meeting between the warm desert air and the cold Benguela ocean current. This humidity is in fact the main source of water for the flora and fauna of the Namib.

☀️ As you can see, there is no really bad time to travel to Namibia. It is one of our favorite destinations: we know it by heart! Contact us to find out which itinerary to choose depending on the season, your interests and your budget.

When to Visit Namibia to See Wildlife?

Namibia is one of the top destinations for photographic safaris in Africa. Whether in the famous Etosha National Park, the Caprivi Strip or the iconic desert wildlife, you will have the opportunity to photograph animals in spectacular landscapes.

Like the rest of Southern Africa, the dry season offers optimal conditions for a photo safari in Namibia. Vegetation is more sparse, providing maximum visibility, and animals tend to gather around waterholes.

During the austral summer, the scenery is completely different, but just as fascinating for nature lovers. The environment becomes greener, migratory birds return and many herbivores give birth.

-> Tip: if you do not have school-age children, prefer May, June and September. These are excellent months in terms of value for money, especially for organizing an unforgettable honeymoon in Namibia.

What Is the Best Time to Enjoy Namibia’s Landscapes?

The desert panoramas of the Namib, the Fish River Canyon or the Kalahari remain spectacular all year round. However, temperatures vary greatly between summer and winter. If you are sensitive to heat, it is better to choose the dry season (austral winter) to enjoy milder temperatures. In summer, the heat remains manageable provided that activities are planned early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

If you dream of slightly greener landscapes, especially in Etosha, the Waterberg or the Caprivi Strip, summer will offer them to you, until the beginning of the austral winter. Once again, the best time to visit Namibia depends on your preferences and constraints.

When to Travel to Namibia for Seaside Activities?

The towns of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay are known for their wide range of sports and leisure activities. Kayaking among seals, catamaran cruises to encounter dolphins and whales, 4x4 excursions, quad biking or sandboarding in the dunes, safaris searching for desert wildlife… the choice is abundant in this region where desert meets ocean.

The climate is rather pleasant all year round, and cooler compared to the scorching temperatures of the desert. During summer, flamingos gather in the Walvis Bay lagoon. However, to observe whales in Namibia, it is better to visit during the austral winter, from June to November.
